In an email to customers, the UK bakery chain has said it has “removed” its Vegan Breakfast Roll from its current range, after completing its “past review”.

It comes as someone reached out to Greggs asking if the item had been discontinued.

Why has Greggs axed its Vegan Breakfast Roll in the UK?

The email response posted on Reddit added: “We do regularly look at our range, so we’re keeping up to date with what our customers would like.

“On completing our last review, we’ve made the decision to give these a well-deserved rest.

“Just to let you know, this may not be a permanent change.”

Greggs continued: “We’re sad to see them go too, but we are pleased to have added new lines, which we hope you’ll try in the future.”

The Greggs Vegan Breakfast Roll was made with vegan Quorn mycoprotein sausages which were packed into a “pillow-soft, corn top roll”, freshly prepared every morning.

Customers often added condiments such as Heinz Ketchup and HP Sauce for extra flavour.

It had received praised from Brits over the years as it was a “decent price and actually tasted good too”.

Reacting to the news of the “rested” vegan breakfast favourite at Greggs, someone wrote on the r/veganuk subreddit: “In newcastle and sunderland, I would usually find one as there are so many greggs. I eat them four or five times a week before work:'(.”

A second customer put: “I wanted one yesterday and couldn’t find one on the shelf… Now we’re just stuck with boring vegan rolls, tasteless steak bakes and soggy wedges.”

One joined in the discussion and said: “This is tragic! Living where I do (think North Yorkshire), that’s pretty much the only safe option if I’ve forgotten my brekkie.”

Meanwhile, the Vegan Food UK Facebook page told its followers: “Another One Bites The Dust.

“Sad news, and it is sad, as the Greggs Vegan Sausage Breakfast Roll will be no more.

“Its sad because this was one of the more budget-friendly highstreet plant based breakfast items.”

One account responded: “I figured as much last week when I went to get one for & there wasn’t one & no label.”

Another replied: “Yes I found out the hard way at 6:30am yesterday morning.”

This person chimed in: “Time to boycott Greggs. The only decent vegan item they have is the sausage roll.”

Newsquest has contacted Greggs for comment.

As well as the Vegan Breakfast Roll and classic Vegan Roll, other meat and dairy-free items introduced by Greggs in recent years have included the Vegan Lattice Steak-Free, Southern Fried Potato Wedges, Glazed Ring Doughnut and Sweet Potato Bhaji and Rice.

Elsewhere, just this week Greggs said it is targeting around 120 further openings this year as it highlighted ambitions to grow to “significantly more than 3,000 UK shops over longer term”.

Greggs revealed it had 121 net store openings in 2025, expanding its shop estate to 2,739 locations by the end of the year.
