Eleven housing estates across south London will receive free performances by the Brixton Chamber Orchestra as part of their 2024 summer estate tour. The events will include performances over two weekends in several Lambeth yards by the 30-piece orchestra group.
The shows, which take place from July 19 to July 28, will feature special guest performances and sing-along songs. The group will perform swing music, waltzes and polkas, disco and more.
The group offers a non-conventional approach to orchestral music and are known for their interpretations of modern songs from the rap and grime genres. Audiences can expect to see “a diverse repertoire that goes beyond the classics,” according to their social company.
Some of the shows will take place in areas with high levels of distress, such as the Angell Town estate which has had a reputation for elevated crime levels over the years. The orchestral group say they aim to “reach new audiences” with their performances and “be an orchestra of and for Brixton”.
According to feedback from their recent Summer Estates tour in July 2023, an estimated 20 percent of the audience had never attended a live orchestral performance before.
The group play festivals around London including one of the UK’s biggest free family festivals, the Lambeth Country Show. They also currently have a monthly residency at the Effra Tavern, Brixton, where they perform every second Sunday of the month. You can visit the Brixton Chamber Orchestra website for more information on times and venues.
