The Government has confirmed that a small number of local authorities will trial new flexible voting options at the May 2026 local elections to make voting more accessible and convenient.

Under plans announced alongside the Representation of the People Bill, pilots will explore options such as opening polling stations in non-traditional venues like supermarkets and train stations.

These trials aim to reduce practical barriers for voters and could inform future electoral reforms if successful.
