With just two weeks of the summer holidays left, there’s still plenty of time for families across Barking and Dagenham to make the most of things to do across the borough.

From hands-on workshops to interactive exhibitions and garden adventures, local heritage sites and museums are offering exciting, free days out. Whether you’re hunting for a unique day trip or just looking to keep the kids entertained, there’s something for everyone.

Here are five free family friendly days out to add to your calendar:

1. Teddy Bear’s Picnic, Wednesday 20 August, 11am – 2pm

Come along to a family-friendly ‘Teddy bears picnic’ and nature fun-day at Eastbrookend Country Park. Enjoy a range of activities to introduce young children to the wonders of nature and having fun outdoors including ‘Snakes Alive’ an interactive reptile display, storyteller in the woods, face-painting and more! No need to book.

2. Valence House Museum, Tuesday – Thursday and Saturday, 10am – 4pm

Get creative with Ancient Abbey Crafts and enjoy activities such as creating pilgrim badges, paper weaving, and medieval writing. All while learning about the history of Barking Abbey and the people who lived there. Pick up a free Explorer Backpack and Activity Trail to complete. No need to book.

Visitors can also explore the brand-new Abbey Archaeology exhibition, which runs until 27 September, where visitors can step into the shoes of an archaeologist and uncover the secrets of Barking Abbey. It’s hands-on and full of surprises for curious kids!

3. Arty’s Sculpture Trail at Eastbrookend Country Park

Arty’s Sculpture Trail takes visitors on a journey through Eastbrookend Country Park, where the kids can immerse themselves in Turtle Arty’s adventures. Young minds get the opportunity to step into the magical world of their imagination and discover the beauty of connection to nature. Collect a map or pick up an activity pack from the Discovery Centre and stop by the Tea Room for a tasty treat!

4. Eastbury Manor House, Friday 10am – 4pm and Sunday 11am – 4pm

Pop over to the magnificent Tudor manor that is Eastbury Manor House, a perfect place for kids to imagine life in the past. Explore dazzling costumes and uncover the history of the house dating back to the Elizabethan era. No need to book.

5. The Women’s Museum’s ‘Map Stories’, Friday 29 August, 12pm – 4pm

Barking and Dagenham is home to a museum dedicated to women’s stories – a great way to inspire the next generation. Join a free interactive family fun day to uncover the stories of maps and how they tell the history and heritage of India and Pakistan, as part of South Asian Heritage Month. Booking required.

Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, said: “With the end of the summer holidays fast approaching, we want to remind families that some of the best adventures are right on your doorstep. Our museums, heritage houses and parks are packed with fun, free activities for children and parents to enjoy together.

Whether you’re getting creative, discovering local heroes, or just spending quality time in beautiful historic spaces, make the most of these final summer days – pack a picnic, bring the kids, and explore the borough’s vibrant offer before school starts again.”
