Anyone who would like to bring a touch of British royalty into their home – even if it is fake – can now make their move: 450 costumes and attributes from the Netflix series are being sold at auction house Bonhams. The crown under the hammer.
Now after six seasons the curtain has fallen on the series The crown the sets, props and costumes can be shipped out. Much ink has been spilled about this: the royals’ wardrobe often has a symbolic charge and the set and costume designers have worked hard to imitate reality as closely as possible.
Bonhams auction house will auction 450 pieces of furniture, props and costumes from the six seasons of the series, including a replica of the golden state carriage and a dress based on the famous revenge dress, which Princess Diana wore the day Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles became public. Also: Claire Foy’s outfit as Elizabeth in the coronation scene and even a replica of the facade of 10 Downing Street.
150 lots will be offered at a live auction in London on February 7. The online auction of 300 items runs from January 30 to February 8 on bonhams.com. Proceeds will go to the National Film and Television School, which will use the money for scholarships over the next two decades.
How much should such a gadget cost? For next to nothing, you can own two porcelain bibelots of corgis – Elizabeth’s favorite dogs – including a framed photo of a corgi (£200 to £300, or 232 to 348 euros). If it costs a little more, you can go for a replica of Diana’s engagement ring for 1,500 to 2,000 pounds (1,700 to 2,300 euros), or her leopard print swimsuit with matching sunglasses (900 to 1,350 euros).
A fence for the garden
You’ll have to dig deeper into your pockets for Elizabeth’s coronation dress and royal ermine cloak. They will sell for 15,000 to 20,000 pounds (17,500 to 23,000 euros). Would you like to incorporate the facade of 10 Downing Street into your living room? That is possible, for 20,000 to 30,000 pounds (23,000 to 35,000 euros). The royal gold state carriage (horses not included) is yours for 30,000 to 50,000 pounds (roughly 35,000 to 58,000 euros). A replica of the wrought iron gate for Buckingham Palace for your garden? 7,000 to 9,300 euros.
“Not only is this an incredible opportunity to own items from the series, but also the closest you can get to it the real thing,” said a representative of the auction house. For those who looking is as good as seeing: all items are exhibited in advance in a free exhibition.
