Ohhh, Euston station. There really is nowhere else quite like it. We can’t live with it, but we also can’t live without it. And unfortunately we’re going to have to endure another taste of the latter this weekend, as Network Rail has announced that London Euston station will be closed for two days over the Early May Bank Holiday.

As one of London’s busiest stationsEuston is a hub for hotfooting it out of the capital city. But this weekend’s closures are due to ongoing engineering works taking place, and these works are set to improve future journeys for passengers. So, we can’t complain too much, I suppose.

When will Euston station be closed?

Euston station will be completely closed on May 4 and May 5. Fewer services will be running out of Euston on May 3so passengers should expect trains to be busier on that day. Network Rail has advised passengers to travel on the days either side of the bank holiday weekendto ensure their journey is as smooth as possible.

Which journeys will be affected?

Journeys on the West Coast Main Line will be affected by the closures, with passengers being advised to check their journeys in advance. There will be no trains running between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central on the days of the station closure. Southbound trains will terminate at Milton Keynes, and rail replacement buses will continue on to London. The Caledonian Sleeper route will also be affected, with trains departing from and arriving into King’s Cross instead.

What engineering works will be taking place?

The major maintenance work happening over the Early May Bank Holiday weekend will include a new track and railway foundation stone being installed between Queen’s Park and Kilburn and ongoing railway drainage improvements being made to prevent flooding, but the majority of the work will be taking place on the line between London Euston and Willesden. Among other things, the track and ballast stones are being replaced, the overhead power lines are being upgraded, the bridge brickwork is being repaired, and the tracks are being realigned. Looks like they’ve got a busy bank holiday weekend ahead of them, hey?

Brian Paynter, Network Rail Capital Delivery head of track, said: “There’s a lot of great work happening over the Early May bank holiday to improve the reliability and safety of the railway for passengers and freight. We know some of this will be disruptive, but bank holidays remain the least busy time for carrying out complex upgrades.”

Find out more about the Euston station closure and check your upcoming journey to see if it will be affected here.
