For travellers in London looking for a spectacular Christmas getaway, this Christmas market sprawls across an extraordinary 280,000 square metres and transforms multiple iconic city squares and streets into a magical winter wonderland.

Europe’s largest Christmas market has opened

The city of Craiova in southwestern Romania hosts the largest Christmas market in Europe across multiple iconic city squares and streets including Mihai Viteazul Square, Frații Buzești Square, William Shakespeare Square, and the Doljana area.

The 2025 market revolves around the enchanting theme of ‘The Nutcracker,’ featuring giant Nutcracker soldiers, illuminated ballerinas, and decorations inspired by the famous ballet. Each area of the market offers a unique atmosphere as part of an artistic journey through the city. A highlight of the opening was a flying Santa Claus and his sleigh soaring above the crowds, creating unforgettable holiday moments.

Over 90 festively decorated chalets and a giant ice rink

Visitors can explore more than 90 charming chalets, selling a variety of local handcrafted gifts, traditional toys, and Christmas decorations, all designed and painted by local artists. Food lovers will enjoy seasonal treats like mulled wine, gingerbread, and hot chocolate alongside Romanian specialties such as cozonac (sweet bread), gogoși (doughnuts), grilled sausages, and hearty traditional dishes prepared on site.

Besides shopping and dining, the market offers a wide range of attractions including a giant ice rink, a panoramic Ferris wheel (the largest in Romania), vintage carousels, and a flying sleigh ride over the city. Nights come alive with spectacular light projections transforming historic buildings, live concerts, children’s choirs, and artistic performances. Creative workshops are also available for children to craft their own Christmas decorations and gifts.

How to get to Europe’s largest Christmas market from London

Craiova is reachable by direct flight from London in approximately 3 hours, making it an ideal destination for a festive city break. The market is open until January 4, 2026, offering ample opportunity for Londoners to experience one of Europe’s most magical Christmas celebrations without long travel times.
