The council says the changes will only impact this year’s election

A West London borough is making election changes which are set to affect 5,000 voters at this year’s local elections.

Ealing Council has announced plans to temporarily relocate some polling stations in the borough for the council elections on May 7. The council says these changes will only apply to this set of elections and not future elections.

Four of the borough’s existing polling stations are unavailable on polling day meaning they need to be relocated, affecting where 5,000 people will cast their vote.

In South Acton, voters will remember being able to cross their ballot at All Saints Church on Church Path. However, because the church is being repurposed voters will now go to the Acton Gardens Community Centre, Unit A (at the rear of Sainsbury’s).

In Perivale, St John Fisher Church Hall will also be unavailable on polling day. This is due to extensive building works taking place.

Instead, voters will use Vicar’s Green Primary School on Lily Gardens. The council says the school is the closest and most suitable replacement.

Voters in Northolt Mandeville will also have to attend a different polling station to usual this year. This is because the Islip Manor Community Centre is not available for this election.

The centre itself is currently vacant and has property guardians living on site. The Lord Halsbury Clubhouse at 48 Arnold Road has been designated as replacement, with Ealing Council citing “excellent” polling facilities and provision of disabled parking.

In Dormers Wells, the Holy Trinity Parish Hall, which typically hosts a polling station, is being repurposed. The nearest available building that the council deems suitable is the Youth Adults Centre at Park View Road.

All new proposed polling stations are considered to possess suitable facilities and extensive disabled parking. Additionally, the council says it has ensured these locations have adequate space for motorised wheelchair manoeuvrability, low-level polling booths and seating for those who need rest.

Due to voter ID laws, all voters must display photographic ID if they wish to vote. Ealing Council has ensured that there will be a private space for voters who wear head coverings for religious reasons to remove their covering to verify their ID in private.
