The DVLA warns millions could miss crucial letters if they don’t update their details

Millions of motorists are being warned they could face difficulties if they do not update crucial paperwork. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a reminder that drivers must amend their address details across several documents – not simply their driving licence.

The alert emphasises four separate records that may require updating to prevent administrative issues arising. With millions of house moves occurring each year, motorists are being encouraged to thoroughly check their paperwork to avoid delays, missed correspondence or potential fines. In a post on X, the agency said: “Moved home? You must update your: Driving licence, Vehicle Log Book, Direct Debit for vehicle tax and private number plate and trailers.”

A detailed list of the records you need to update if you move house are listed below.

Driving licence

Drivers must update both provisional and full licences when relocating home. According to official guidance, motorists can amend the address on their driving licence online. You can continue to drive whilst waiting for your new licence to arrive.

The DVLA states there is no need to notify them if the relocation is temporary – for instance, students living away at university – provided you can still be contacted at your permanent address, reports the Express.

Vehicle log book (V5C)

If you are the registered keeper of a vehicle, you must also update the address on its V5C log book. This document is separate from your driving licence and confirms who is responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle.

Failing to keep it current could mean important correspondence – including fines or vehicle tax reminders – is sent to the wrong address.

Direct Debit for vehicle tax

Motorists who pay their vehicle tax via Direct Debit are required to notify the DVLA whenever they change address. Unlike other types of updates, drivers are advised to contact the DVLA by telephone to report any change of address linked to a Direct Debit arrangement.

Private number plates and trailers

Drivers with personalised registration plates that are not currently assigned to a vehicle must update their V750 or V778 documents. Furthermore, those who own a trailer and intend to take it overseas must register it at their new address and update their trailer registration certificate.

The DVLA emphasises that there is no requirement to notify them of a temporary move, however any permanent change of address must be recorded.
