Dr Michael Mosley has reiterated NHS advice that ‘almost everyone’ should be taking a Vitamin D supplement in the winter months. Normally, the body synthesises Vitamin D – which is crucial for healthy bones, muscles and teeth – from sunlight. However, our moody isles means most people will not get enough from going outside alone.
One way is getting it through diet, but again, lots of people will struggle with getting these – this is where supplements come in, as part of a balanced diet. When asked about supplements on forum Mumsnet in July, he said: “Although, at the moment, you will be topping up your vitamin D levels every time you go outside, the NHS recommends that almost everyone in the UK should be taking vitamin D between October and March, and those with a darker skin should be taking it year round.”
Vitabiotics sell two kinds of strengths to help support your immune system – Ultra Vitamin D 1000 IU (£3.33 or £3.16 if you subscribe at Amazon; £4.05 from Boots; £5.49 from Holland Barrett) and extra strength 2000 IU (£4.50 or £4.28 if you subscribe on Amazon, £6.45 at Boots; £8.45 at Holland and Barrett).

However, the British Heart Foundation recommends you only need around 400 IU, so the cheaper option is probably best if you go out and about with your skin uncovered. If you do opt for the higher option, it’s not recommended you take it for extended periods of time due to calcium build up. Other supplements include Boots’ Vitamin D tablets (400 IU) for £3.20 or Calcium, Vitamin D3 (1000 IU) and Vitamin K1 Capsules from Bulk for £5.49.
Dr Mosley’s advice is reiterated by the NHS, who say: “During the autumn and winter, you need to get vitamin D from your diet because the sun is not strong enough for the body to make vitamin D.
“But since it’s difficult for people to get enough vitamin D from food alone, everyone (including pregnant and breastfeeding women) should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D during the autumn and winter.”
