The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) has hosted its ‘Enhancing Safeguarding in Wales – Developing and maintaining a collaborative approach’ conference in Cardiff.

Presenting networking opportunities for invited safeguarding professionals, the conference has sought to develop and strengthen strategic alliances across the safeguarding landscape in Wales to advance shared safeguarding objectives.

A recurring theme discussed during candid sessions included – how organisations can work with DBS to ensure quality referrals are made at the right time, ensuring that those who pose a risk to the vulnerable are barred from working in regulated activity in a timely way.

DBS, an arm’s length body of the Home Office, helps employers make safer recruitment decisions each year by processing and issuing DBS checks for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

It is also responsible for maintaining the Adults’ and Children’s Barred Lists, determining whether individuals should be barred from engaging in regulated activities with vulnerable groups, including children.

Jeff James, Chief Executive of the Disclosure & Barring Service, said: “DBS is keen to showcase its ongoing commitment to safeguarding in the region, promoting key messages around protecting those at risk of harm, collaborating with partners and stakeholders and raising the profile of DBS’ regional outreach support that is available to organisations across Wales.”

As part of DBS’ ongoing commitment, the organisation is working closely with local partners and organisations to ensure that the most up to date safeguarding best practice is shared and enacted.

Further guidance and support provided by DBS’ Regional Outreach Service, spanning Wales, can be found here: The DBS Regional Outreach service – GOV.UK
