Alderwoman Dame Susan Langley DBE has today been elected as the 697th Lord Mayor of London, succeeding Alderman Alastair King.

Dame Susan becomes the third woman in the Corporation’s history to hold the office – and the first to use the title, Lady Mayor.

As the elected head of the Corporation, she will formally take office on Friday 7th of November at the Silent Ceremony, with the Lady Mayor’s Banquet being held later this year.

Serving as a global ambassador for the UK’s financial and professional services sector, Lady Mayor Elect Langley will work with business leaders and government representatives both here and overseas to strengthen global business ties and promote opportunities for UK growth.  Acting as an international spokeswoman for the City, she will seek to promote the U.K. as an attractive destination for investment.

She has pledged to champion a ‘Modern Mayoralty’ – a long-term, strategic approach designed to ensure the role remains relevant, resilient, and aligned with government and industry to maximise its effectiveness.  This will deliver greater continuity across mayoral terms with the focus on

·       Global Leadership: Maintaining London’s position as the world’s leading financial and professional services hub.

·       Reputation: Strengthening the standing of the Square Mile, the City Corporation, and the UK on the world stage.

·       Business Growth: Championing conditions that enable companies to thrive.

·       Social Impact: Ensuring the City makes a positive contribution to wider society and offers opportunities to all.

Lady Mayor Elect Langley brings extensive experience in both business, civic and charitable service and has held directorships in key financial and public institutions.

Lady Mayor Elect Dame Susan Langley DBE said:

“It is a profound honour to be elected as Lady Mayor of the .

“The Mayoralty plays a vital role in building relationships, convening leaders, and championing the UK’s financial and professional services at home and abroad in the face of increasing competition.

“The City is a fantastic place to live and work and offers the expertise, the services and the infrastructure that companies need to do business. We are still the worlds leading financial centre but we must continue to innovate and look forward not back, to drive long term prosperity for the U.K. economy

“My priorities will be strengthening London’s global leadership, enhancing its reputation, driving business growth, and ensuring the City makes a positive social impact and attracts the talent that it needs.”
