The Corporation has announced a major programme of electrical safety inspections across its housing stock, as part of urgent action to address delays identified in recent internal reviews.

The organisation, which governs the Square Mile, is also a social housing provider, managing 12 estates across the and six London boroughs.

The review found that 1,184 homes have not undergone electrical safety checks – covering fuse boxes, wiring, and fittings – in over five years, which exceeds recommended testing intervals.

In response, the City Corporation has informed the Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) and submitted a detailed action plan to ensure full compliance.

Ensuring the safety of residents remains a top priority. The City Corporation has committed to completing all outstanding inspections by April 2026.

Two accredited electrical contractors have been appointed to carry out the inspections. They will also undertake any urgent repairs identified during the testing process.

The City Corporation is already delivering a multi-million-pound investment in major improvement works across its housing estates, including upgrades to windows, kitchens, bathrooms, heating, lifts, and fire safety. It is also carrying out energy efficiency works and general estate improvement, such as landscaping, security, fencing and waste storage.

Chair of the City Corporation’s Community and Children’s Services Committee, Helen Fentimen, said:

“The safety and wellbeing of all our residents is our absolute priority.

“Everyone deserves to live in a safe, secure, and comfortable home, and we are bringing all our housing stock up to standard as quickly as possible.

“We thank our residents for their understanding and cooperation as we carry out this important work.”

Residents in affected homes will soon receive letters inviting them to book appointments for the necessary inspections. Once completed, all homes will move onto a regular five-year inspection cycle to maintain ongoing electrical safety standards.
