With a mini-heatwave imminent this weekend, it’s only right to be dreaming and scheming beachy day trips from London. When we think of beach trips near Londonalmost immediately Brighton and Kent come to mind but we’re here to tell you that it’s time to look far beyond the usual suspects because there’s another charming seaside town that has long been neglected by us Londoners.

Regaining a direct train connection to London King’s Cross for the first time since 1992, Cleethorpes is renowned to be home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the country.

Grand Central has submitted plans to restore direct rail services between London King’s Cross and Cleethorpes, ending a 30-year hiatus. This new route will include stops at Doncaster, Scunthorpe, and Grimsby, offering four return services daily. The improved connectivity is expected to add nearly 775,000 seats annually and significantly enhance travel convenience.

Why Cleethorpes is one of the UK’s best seaside destinations

Known for its expansive sandy beaches and traditional seaside charm, Cleethorpes attracts families, couples, and solo travellers. Its clean, well-maintained coastline, vibrant promenade, and range of attractions make it a standout coastal town on the east coast of England.

The return of direct trains is projected to generate around £30 million in economic growth for the region. Local officials highlight how improved transport links will boost tourism, create jobs, and support local businesses, revitalising the town’s economy after decades of limited accessibility.

When will the new direct trains to Cleethorpes start running?

The new direct services are expected to launch in December 2026. In the meantime, Londoners looking to leave the city can explore other UK seaside towns with regular rail services, such as Whitstable, Margate, and Brighton, which offer easy access.

But the excitement to have the restored rail link is bubbling as it will make day trips and weekend breaks from London to Cleethorpes more convenient than ever. This is great news for holidaymakers seeking a quick, hassle-free escape to one of the UK’s best beachesjust in time for the summer!
