Tickets for what will be a genuine once-in-a-lifetime event will go on sale on Wednesday 1 July 2026, as the British Museum prepares to host the Bayeux Tapestry.

The exhibition of the 70-metre-long masterpiece, telling the dramatic story of the Norman Conquest stitch by stitch, is expected to become one of the most sought-after exhibitions in the Museum’s history.

Prices are still to be confirmed.

Tickets for visits between September and December 2026 will go on sale on 1st July, with two further releases planned:

  • October 2026 for visits from January to March 2027
  • January 2027 for visits from April to July 2027

Demand is expected to be intense – but there is a way to get tickets before they go on general sale.

Joining the British Museum’s membership scheme offers priority booking before public sales open, free repeat visits to all paid exhibitions, including this one, and access to exclusive events. Membership costs £74 per year, which is roughly the same as if you paid for three of their exhibitions.

Details about joining the membership scheme are here.

Otherwise, Wednesday 1st July 2026 is the date to circle, underline, and set reminders for.

The Museum has also confirmed that special early opening hours will be reserved for British schoolchildren, ensuring young people across the country can experience this historic loan. A wider national programme linked to the tapestry’s visit is also being planned, so that those unable to travel to London can still share in this extraordinary moment.

It’s history coming home, likely once, and never again.
