Another London bakery was also featured on the Baker’s Dozen 2026 list

An artisan bakery which opened in south London just over a year ago has been named the best in the country in the British Baker’s magazine Baker’s Dozen 2026. The list celebrates the scrumptious bread and creativity of artisan bakeries across the UK, with nearly all of the nation’s great cities evenly represented.

But it was London which claimed the top spot as August Bakery on Battersea Rise, near Clapham Common, was named Britain’s Best Bakery, run by by husband and wife team Harry Robins and Florrie Beard.

The couple first began selling bread when they set up a micro-bakery in their Putney flat during lockdown and Harry delivered across SW postcodes using his cargo bike. Harry now works in the kitchen with head baker Sesilia Adamia, who studied at culinary school in Dublin, while Florrie manages front of house.

Their signature items include their wildly popular sourdough, their Kouign Amann (caramelised French pastry) and their delicious ham, cheese, and fennel seed swirl. Other baked goods showcased on Instagram include candied orange, chocolate and Persian lime curd tarts, crème pat & bramley apple crumble as well as quince cheesecake buns.

Meanwhile, London triumphed once against on the Baker’s Dozen 2025 at Chatsworth Bakehouse in Crystal Palace took the number 3 slot on the list. This quirky indie bakery serves baked goods heaped with substance – its Mortadella stuffed pickle pie is a big beast – a sandwich of bubbly dough filled with Italian sausage mortadella, shaved onion, house secret sauce, and finished with dill, olive oil and parmesan.

Another mighty sandwich at Chatsworth Bakehouse is its “Sarniflette” made up of thick-cut smoked ham, whizzed reblochon, shoestring potatoes with garlic and thyme salt, grated comte reserve, mustard, shaved white onion and blonde ale pickle relish.

Chatsworth Bakehouse also supplies plenty of sweet treats, with vanilla-glazed cinnamon rolls, cereal cookies and the all-too tempting Guinness cake. A worthy top three bakery.
