Bridgerton Season 3 Book Spoilers Explained
Bridgerton Season 3 is confirmed to use the fourth book Bridgerton in the series “Romancing Mister Bridgerton” as the inspiration for the story. This means that the series skips the third book, “An Offer From a Gentleman” in favor of its literary successor.
This book focuses a lot on Penelope and Colin. It begins with a flashback to their first meeting, as readers learn how a gust of wind sends Penelope’s bonnet flying into Colin’s face, causing him to fall from his horse. She immediately falls in love with him as he laughs at the whole situation.
Colin is unaware of Penelope’s feelings for him over the years as they become close friends. However, she later overhears Colin telling his brothers that he would never marry her, but Penelope pretends that this remark does not hurt her, even though she is heartbroken.
Fast-forward a decade, and Penelope is seen as a blue-eyed 28-year-old, while Colin has shunned marriage and traveled the world at 33.
They meet and resume their relationship, although Penelope is shocked when she finds his travel diary. Colin admits that he wants to be recognized as something other than a charming but not exactly bright man.
When Penelope realizes she doesn’t want to be alone forever, she asks Colin to kiss her, causing their emotions to get the better of them as they realize their feelings have changed radically.
The rest of the book highlights the speculation behind Lady Whistledown’s true identity, with Colin having doubts about who she is after a public challenge is issued to reveal the real person. This is before Cressida Twombley announces that she is Whistledown, although not everyone is convinced. Colin follows Penelope through town.
After seeing her leave the envelope at the church, Colin learns that Penelope is really Whistledown, leaving him furious that she kept the secret for so long and put herself in danger. Eventually, after an argument about this secret, Colin proposes to Penelope, and they marry, with Colin revealing Whistledown’s secret to everyone.
What will happen in season 3 of Bridgerton?
The biggest change from the books Bridgerton Season 3 is the aforementioned Whistledown reveal, and Penelope’s alter ego was already revealed in Season 1 of the Netflix series.
This revelation came much earlier in the TV show than in the source material, which already changes the dynamic for fans of both properties, even if it hasn’t changed the overall feel of the story.
Additionally, star Nicola Coughlan previously stated in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum (via TikTok) that they were filming. “very important scene” for season 3. He also explained its features “something that happens in books” and reveals to fans that they “broke the furniture” during shooting.
Many believe this is a scene from the living room where Penelope and Colin sleep together after their engagement when they get some alone time.
However, nothing else has been revealed, leaving many to wonder what other changes the show will make to the source material once everything is revealed.
The first four episodes Bridgerton Season 3 debuts on Netflix on Thursday, May 16, with the final four to follow on June 13.
