Corporation elected Member Brian Mooney has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours for services to the community in the and in Coggeshall, Essex.
Brian was first elected to the City Corporation’s Court of Common Council, the organisation’s top decision-making body, in 1998, to represent the ward of Queenhithe.
He was twice elected Chief Commoner of the City Corporation, acting as an ambassador at its ceremonial occasions, and working to uphold the rights and privileges of its elected Members.
He also has a long-standing involvement in his local community in Coggeshall where he helped set up and run a group of volunteer litter-pickers – the Coggeshall Litterati – who in 2023 alone filled nearly 700 refuse sacks from the town’s streets, open spaces, and surrounding roadsides.
He is a prize-winning journalist and author and worked for Reuters for 30 years in more than 50 countries.
Since leaving Reuters, Brian has worked in international PR and has published six books and contributed articles to The Times, The Financial Times, The Tablet, and various magazines.

A long-distance walker and mountaineer, Brian is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and has an Oxford University degree in History and French.
