There has been a worrying update on the reviews of the anticipated PS5 port Black Myth: Wukong.
Based on one of the greatest stories of Chinese mythology, Journey to the West, the game will be released for PC and PS5 on August 19 (the Xbox release was delayed to a TBD date due to further development). Prior to its debut, the game has received reviews placing it at #82 on Metacritic.
There’s one catch, though: these impressions only focus on the PC version. There is currently no word on how its PS5 counterpart will perform or if there will be an update before the game’s official release.
Black Myth Wukong gets a worrying update for PS5 reviews
A new update paints a worrying picture of the PS5 version’s reviews Black Myth: Wukong.
According to Kotaku Senior Editor Ethan Gach at X (formerly Twitter). “No one has received (a) PS5 code for the game” although Sony previously promoted the project under the name “one of the most anticipated PS5 games of the year:”
“‘Black Myth: Wukong’ review ban is still in place, but only for the PC version. No one has gotten a PS5 code for the game as far as I know, despite it coming out four days later. Especially weird since Sony has been promoting it as one of the most anticipated PS5 games of the year .”
This is far from normal, as games usually have review codes sent to editors and critics so that they can be properly reviewed and evaluated before release. Often this is done in plenty of time, as playing the entire game can take time.
Should fans be worried about Black Myth: Wukong on PS5?
This is very strange behavior from a game developer (in this case Game Science is behind Black Myth: Wukong). It’s also never a good sign in general, especially when it’s not publicized.
That means the PS5 port likely has some issues that the developers are trying to figure out before release that they want to address before critical comments blow it up.
While the game’s PC reviews are generally positive, some of the biggest complaints stem from the game’s bugs and technical performance issues, even on high-end PCs.
The RPG site specifically advises how “Several questionable design and game design choices combined with a hefty amount of performance issues and bugs unfortunately drag it down.”
It’s not all bad though. Gamersky exclaimed that the game “(achieves) world-class standards in art and performance,” when God is a geek praised it “sublime combat and expert boss design.”
Hopefully Sony can figure out what’s going on behind the scenes to avoid a PS5 port Black Myth: Wukong crashes and burns.
