Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s ending set the scene between Fire Lord Ozai and Avatar Aang.
The Netflix series closely follows the animated source material, telling the story of the Last Airbender, Aang, who must overcome insurmountable odds to fulfill his duty as the Avatar to stop the ruthless rule of the Fire Nation.
The eight-episode first season follows Aang’s journey with his new friends – Katara and Soka – to the Northern Water Tribe, meeting allies, enemies and the spirits of past avatars along the way.
Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender: Did Aang Save the North?
Warning – the rest of this article contains Netflix spoilers Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Things went from bad to worse for Team Avatar The Last Airbender finale as Admiral Zhao (Ken Leung) and a battalion of Fire Nation ships set out to attack the North Pole. It is obvious that Zhao has been possessed by his great ambition to become a Fire Lord, but little did he know that this would bring about his downfall.
Aang (Gordon Cormier), Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) allied with the Northern Water Tribe to defend their home, but Zhao’s reckless actions to kill the physical manifestation of the Moon Spirit turned the tide in favor of the Fire Nation. , which meant that waterbending ceased to exist.
Aang then decided to use his Avatar state to fuse with the Ocean Spirit to gain the upper hand, but was losing himself in the process as it unleashed his monstrous form known as the Wrath.
Princess Yue (Amber Midthunder) then told Soka that part of Moon’s spirit resides within him, so he transferred that life force back to the koi fish, reviving Moon’s spirit and restoring balance to the world.
Aang and his allies defeated the Fire Nation forces, and Zhao was killed by Uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) before he left with Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) to fight one more day.
Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender Episode 8 was very similar to the season 1 finale of the anime series with differences such as Momo interfering with Zhao’s speech and Yue kissing Sokka as a ghost.
Another key difference was Katara’s presence in the final confrontation. While the animated series didn’t give Katara much to do, the series did show her fighting Zuko before giving a heartfelt speech to Aang about returning to them in his anger form.
Katara’s speech to Aang in the end also served as a romantic hint for the couple’s future in the distant future.
Avatar: The Last Airbender: What is Sozin’s Comet?
Avatar: The Last AirbenderThe post-credits scene teased what’s to come in Season 2 and beyond.
The Great Sage (François Chau) told Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) about the method they devised “better understand the movement of the sky” before Ozai announced the return of Sozin’s comet.
Ozai’s ominous declaration spells doom not only for Team Avatar, but for the rest of the world as well.
In character Sozin’s comet is a celestial body that passes close to Earth, giving firebenders tremendous powers. In Ozai’s own words, adding is similar to getting “the power of a hundred suns”.
Interestingly, “Sozin’s Comet” is also the title of the four-part series finale of the animated series, where Aang and Fire Lord Ozai duke it out as the fate of the world hangs in the balance.
It remains to be seen if Season 2 of the potential Netflix live-action adaptation of Sozin’s Comet will be included, as there are still many stories to be told.
Aang has yet to master waterbending and earthbending, so he must learn them first before facing Fire Lord Ozai in the final confrontation.
Since the series closely follows the animated series, a potential season 2 could add to Azula’s reign of terror and her ongoing riff with her brother Zuko.
Toph’s arrival and the introduction of Ba Sing Se (the capital of the Earth Kingdom) are also expected to take up a good portion of the Season 2 story, while the discussion of Sozin’s comet impact on the Fire Nation could be spread throughout.
