Netflix live action Avatar: The Last Airbender the series is a sure hit, but the series still lacks an official season 2 confirmation.
Netflix tells the same story (with a few minor tweaks) as the beloved Nickelodeon animated series in the late 2000s. Airbender Take fans back to a world of factions of warring elements and the plight of a young boy who is prophesied to save it all.
According to Netflix’s internal data, 21.2 million people watched the show in its first four days on the platform, amassing 154.3 million hours of streaming. However, the streamer is tight-lipped about possible follow-up actions.
When will Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 be released on Netflix?
At the time of writing, there was no official confirmation of a second season Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Despite this, the cast and crew have commented that they want to do more.
According to Katara actor Kiawentiio, he “wish(s) for season 2 and 3, believe that the story only gets better as it goes along (via Elle):
“I’m definitely hoping for seasons 2 and 3. I think we all really want that for this show. I’m proud of what we’ve done in the first season, but I think there’s also so much to look forward to. With an animated series, it just gets better every season. So there’s a lot scenes I’d like to recreate and relationships I’d like to see.”
However, Kiawentiio may get his wish. As What’s On Netflix spotted, a LinkedIn job listing in January 2023 apparently revealed that the writers’ room for season two had already been assembled.
The now-deleted information appeared on the user’s LinkedIn profile and said they had been working “Writers’ Room Assistant” for Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2, January 2023 to January 2024.
Although it is unlikely that this LinkedIn user was working the whole time character writers’ room in 2023 due to the months-long Hollywood writers’ strike, it could mean that scripts have been in the works for a second season.
This is in direct contrast to the comments of Albert Kim, the showrunner of the Netflix series.
In February 2024, Kim told The Hollywood Reporter “I didn’t focus beyond season 1,” before the release of the first episode:
“I didn’t focus beyond Season 1. It was enough without the extra hurdle and challenge to finish Season 1, that’s been the focus. And again, in hindsight, you can look back and see the animated series every season feels a little different.”
If the scripts are ready and the writers’ room has finished work on Season 2, the release might happen sooner than you think.
With the scripts in hand (and only the scripts in hand), the show could go back in front of the cameras as soon as this year – maybe sometime this summer or fall.
The first season took seven months to film, running from November 2021 to June 2022. The series then came to Netflix 18 months later in February 2024.
Following the same production process as Season 1 (and assuming filming begins this summer), Season 2 will be released sometime in mid-2026.
However, it seems unlikely that the post-production process will take as long as Season 1. Yes, the series is incredibly VFX-heavy, but it’s probably safe to assume that the series was kept a bit longer to avoid the aftermath of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that shut down Hollywood in 2023 .
If this slightly accelerated schedule were to come true, the series could premiere as early as the first quarter of 2026, but that’s just a prediction.
Who will appear in the cast of Netflix’s Avatar season 2?
Season 2 on Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender will probably follow Second Book: Earth from the animated series (as season 1 followed First book: Water), there is at least an assumption as to which characters will play a role in this next chapter character shaking.
It can be assumed that all the key characters from Season 1 will return for Season 2.
This includes all of Team Avatar, namely Gordon Cormier’s Avatar Aang, Kiawentiio’s lovable waterbender Katara, and Ian Ousley’s lovable oaf Sokka.
Team Avatar will likely continue to clash (and sometimes collaborate) with members of the Fire Nation established in Season 1, including Dallas Liu’s Prince Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyun Lee’s General Iroh, Daniel Dae Kim’s Fire Lord Ozai, and Elizabeth. Princess Azula of Yu – who was a new addition to Season 1 and originally debuted in Season 2 of the animated series.
Season 2 will likely also feature a few new main characters from the animation character universe. A few new entrants to the series that need shedding are likely the tough earthbender Toph Beifong and Long Feng, the head of the earthbending police force known as Dai Li.

What happens in Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2?
If/when Avatar: The Last Airbender has been renewed for a second season on Netflix, it can be assumed that it will follow the plot of the second season of the hit animated series it adapted.
Season 2 of the Nickelodeon series (title Second book: Earth) sees Team Avatar – Aang, Katara, and Sokka – go to the Earth Kingdom in hopes that Aang will master Earthbending.
In their quest, they eventually recruit a young earthbender, Toph Beifong, who helps Aang in his quest to master all four bending styles and become the next Avatar.
Along the way, the series’ core cast of heroes must continue to evade the Fire Nation’s reborn Prince Zuko, his sister Princess Azula, and her brutal female firebenders.
Although the original series takes place over the course of one calendar year, it’s been teased that the live-action show might push things back a bit.
Series showrunner Albert Kim told Entertainment Weekly that the time jump is likely to be between seasons 1 and 2 because the creative team knew that “couldn’t (they) do” their view of the story takes place at the same time:
“All three seasons of the animated series essentially take place in one calendar year,” Kim told Entertainment Weekly. “We couldn’t do that. So we had to plan this first season, especially to account for the possibility. some time between season one and season two.”
This leap forward wouldn’t change much from a story point of view, but would only age the actors playing the characters in live-action.
