Originally, Monica and Stephen were the epitome of opposites attraction. Stephen was a veteran union electrician and Monica was a fine, upper-middle-class sales manager. However, Monica was drawn to Stephen’s honesty, thoughtfulness and openness. Stephen admitted he voted for Trump in 2016 because he hated Hillary Clinton and grew up with a Republican father, but he voted for Biden in 2020, revealing his varied political history. Also, through an online DNA test, he discovered that he was about 13% Nigerian.

Monica was impressed that Stephen took it upon himself to learn more about Nigerian culture after believing himself to be Italian on his father’s side for most of his life. Stephen presented a few red flags in the pods other than his penchant for “masculinity” and talking too much. Monica gladly accepted his proposal.

Things took a turn in Mexico when Monica got tired of Stephen’s constant talking. In addition, she seemed troubled by his frequent nerves and conversations about sex. Speaking with his co-star Garrett Josemans during the group outing, Stephen shared his excitement about the random “home destroyers” slipped into their messages after the show, confusing both Taylor Krause and Monica. When Stephen shared his insecurities about getting married, Monica began to withhold sex.

Monica clearly couldn’t stand Stephenand he was afraid of him. This theme was reflected in the relationship between Hannah Jiles and Nick as Hannah constantly humiliated and scolded him. Stephen and Monica also had an uncomfortable conversation where Stephen asked Monica “treat him like a piece of meat,“ which shocked him. He also went on to talk about sexual acts that didn’t involve Monica and joked that giving birth was like a man with the flu. Monica wanted more from Stephen, and he just gave her red flags.
