About the Apollo Victoria Theatre
The Apollo Victoria is one of the largest venues on the West End, with a seating capacity of 2,304. It first opened as a cinema in 1930 and would host variety performances as well as films. The beautiful art deco building features horizontal banding to the exterior, iconic to the style, and was Grade II listed in 1972. In the 1950s, while still a cinema, the Apollo Victoria hosted a mix of ballet, live performances and films. In 1981 the venue reopened as a dedicated live performance theatre. A concert commemorated the occasion, with Shirley Bassey as the headline act.
The Apollo Victoria has hosted prolific musicals such as The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Bee Gees musical Saturday Night Fever and the long-running Starlight Express from 1984-2002. Since 2006 the Victoria Palace has been the home of blockbuster Broadway musical Wicked, for which the interior was elaborately redecorated to reflect the Emerald City of Oz. A special performance, featuring original cast members, was held in 2016 to celebrate the production’s 10th anniversary, and Wicked tickets remain a hugely popular choice for theatregoers. It is now the sixth longest-running show currently playing in the West End.
