A hidden corner of Brixton Tube station could soon be serving up more than just train rides – plans have been submitted to Lambeth Council to transform part of the station into a brand-new restaurant.
The proposed eatery would take over a disused section at the back of the station on Electric Lanea space that was previously used by Transport for London (TfL) staff as a recreation area. Now, TfL’s property arm, Places for Londonis looking to breathe new life into the space, replacing its existing shutters with a proper entrance and installing ventilation to accommodate a full-service restaurant.
While the potential operator remains a mystery for now, the plans suggest space for signage above the entrance, hinting at what could become an exciting new dining spot in the heart of Brixton.
One of the key considerations for the project is the impact on the local community, particularly concerns around antisocial behaviour. To address this, the restaurant would not offer takeaway services, a move that Places for London believes will help reduce loitering and street disturbances. In fact, they argue that adding another active business to the street will help create a more welcoming and vibrant atmosphere.
As for when you could grab a meal there, the proposed opening hours are 10am to 11pm from Sunday to Thursday, extending to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays – perfect for catching a bite before or after a night out.
According to planning documents, repurposing this space would not only introduce an attractive new dining option to Brixton but also enhance the look of the building, which is currently considered an eyesore in the Brixton conservation area.
Now, it’s up to Lambeth Council to decide whether to give the green light to this transformation. If approved, Brixton could soon have a fresh new restaurant tucked away in one of its most unexpected locations.
