Italian food, but not as you know it

Mentmore Terrace has been undergoing a bit of a reshuffle of late: Wonton Charlie’s and Café Kowloon have settled in, and Papi has bowed out, opening up its site for new owners. And it didn’t take long for the new guys to move in. Auguste, from chef Mike Bagnall (ex-ELM) and GM Dylan Walters (ex-Bambi), is here, bringing a slice of Abruzzo to East London via charcoal grills and a steady flow of wine.

On an early April evening, the place is already ticking. Tables are filled, especially outside, as the city’s had its first proper hit of sun. Inside, it’s white tablecloths, warm wood and soft pastel tones.

Eat This

The whole menu revolves around arrosticini, those slender Abruzzese skewers cooked over charcoal and meant to be eaten fast. There are lamb and wagyu options, and both are properly good: deeply savoury, nicely charred, and served with dips. Fair warning, the chilli one is spicy AF.

Beyond the skewers, the crushed smoked potato topped with raw tuna is unmissable. It’s the kind of dish that makes you instantly order a second round.

The stracciatella with Ibérico tomato is a softer, creamier counterpoint, while the rich, comforting capoletti in lamb brodo is another standout. There are larger plates on offer too, like whole grilled fish, but honestly, the skewers and smaller dishes are enough. Especially when there’s rhubarb on the dessert menu.

Drink This

Wine is a big part of the draw. It’s all low-intervention with small producers and Italian varieties dominating the list, with five by-the-glass options and a rotating magnum to keep things interesting. It’s the kind of list where you can safely point and trust you’ll land on something good. Cocktails are classic, with Negronis and Martinis done properly, plus a Camparino that’s very easy to keep ordering. There’s also a decent line-up of amari and digestifs if you’re settling in for the long haul.

Why Go?

It’s a little different. It might be Italian, but there’s not a pizza or pasta in sight. The food’s strong, the wine’s well chosen, and the whole place has the kind of easy energy you want from a neighbourhood spot. Nab a table outside in the sun and it’s even better, especially when you’re sitting there with a glass in hand, watching the people in the fitness studio across the street eye up your skewers while sweating their tits off.
