Bowie fans, assemble! An all-new exhibition is on its way to The Fitzrovia Chapel, showcasing a collection of photographs taken by Kevin Davies, all of which capture David Bowie over a single day at the prime of his life back in 1992.
Entitled David Bowie – A London Day, the exhibit features twenty photographs, with hopes to honor his life and legacy by presenting the archive as a meditative experience, thanks to the intimate images of the late rock legend.
The collection of photographs comes from a commissioned session when Davies was asked to take some promotional shots of Bowie in preparation for the release of his 18th studio album, Black Tie White Noise.
Capturing David Bowie
This said session took place on Sunday 13th December 1992 at a studio space in Clerkenwell, with many of the images then approved by Bowie for promotional and press use during the album cycle.
It wasn’t until 2020 that the images were uncovered by Davies during the initial COVID-19 lockdown, with perfectly preserved negatives of over 400 images from this single session.
Kevin Davies said: “I finally had the opportunity to do something I had wanted to do for such a long time; rediscovering past jobs in their totality.”
“For me, this exhibition is a chance to show the photographic process beyond a commission.”
Not only is this your chance to witness some uncovered beauties from Bowie’s career, but the exhibition will be taking over the stunning Fitzrovia Chapel, a serene nineteenth-century chapel in the heart of the city, enforcing how the images transcend in meaning following the loss of Bowie back in 2016.
This must-see photography exhibition is curated by journalist, cultural historian, and avid Bowie fan, Dylan Jones. He said in a statement: “This is a fascinating body of work as it’s a visual narrative that takes place over the course of a single session on a single day.”
“Not only does it show David Bowie’s extraordinary attention to detail, but it also shows Kevin Davies’ ability to shape and catalogue that narrative. I love these pictures.”
It’s the perfect outing for any Bowie fan, especially as we wait for the V&A’s exciting exhibition delving into their mind-boggling Bowie archive, which features over 80,000 items.
David Bowie – A London Day will be at Fitzrovia Chapel, running from 1st March 2024 until the 20th March 2024. For more information, click here. The exhibition is free of charge, and opening times vary with the space closed on Mondays.
