season 3 / Sweet tooth finally revealed the true meaning of the series’ iconic purple flowers.
Based on the DC Comics story of the same name, the fantastic Netflix series introduces the audience to a distant world where a disease called The Sick pushes humanity to the brink (more about The Sick here).
However, with the emergence of this strange disease also comes these strange half-human-half-animal hybrid creatures who are unjustly blamed for the mysterious disease.
What are the purple flowers in the candy?
After years of wondering, fans finally know the meaning of the purple flowers in the picture Sweet tooth.
Since the beginning of the series, these purple buds have been seen growing in areas infected with the show’s central virus known as The Sick.
This was used as a signal to the characters and the audience to learn that those with the disease were nearby (at least at some point).
In the universe, purple flowers were believed to have caused a viral pandemic, causing passers-by to fear the flamboyant fauna.
However, in the second season, it was revealed that the lily-like bulbs did not cause the sick, as Adeel Akhtar’s Dr. Aditya Singh became infected and died after entering a room full of them.
However, this does not mean that they are completely harmless. They have been shown to have hallucinogenic properties, causing visions of hybrids such as the series’ protagonist Gus (played by Christian Convery).
Season 3 continues to explore the origins of the flowers and finally pulls back the curtain on where they come from. In episode 5 of the final season of the series, a flower grows out of Thacker’s chest after he hits a tree with an axe.
This tree is said to be the origin of The Sick, proving that when Thacker became one of the first infected humans, a flower sprouted from within him.
This means that purple flowers are not the cause of The Sick, but an aftereffect of a dangerous disease.
Looking at the end of the series, this would make sense, as flowers were always seen in infected areas, indicating the remains of a dead person who succumbed to the ordeal.
These flowers have an even deeper meaning and strike a chord Sweet tooth story and its themes.
The flowers themselves are a symbol of dead people and represent what would happen to the world after humanity.
It cynically paints a picture of the impact of the human race on the Earth and shows that the beauty of nature would flourish without homo sapiens.
It presents the idea that perhaps Earth would be better off without humanity, and leaves the audience with the idea that the death of civilization as we know it might ultimately be best for the planet itself.
