First stage
The Giro d’Italia 2024 begins in Vanaria Real. This opening stage is 140km long, ending in Turin. There are plenty of hills for the peloton to navigate right from the off. Is anyone going to make a move on the opening day, or will the peloton try and get into a rhythm before the first attacks of the race?
There are valuable points up for grabs but the riders have to get through 3,321km and climb 44,650m before they make it to Rome. Nobody wants to move too early.
Giro d’Italia preview
Tadej Pogačar is the red-hot favourite to end up with the maglia rosa, not least because Jonas Vineguarrd and last year’s winner Primož Roglič are not taking part.
Arguably, the more interesting battle is who will come second in the general classification. Team GB Olympic hero and former Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas, of Ineos Grenadiers, is expected to put up a good fight, particularly in the time trials stages. A challenge could also come from Decathlon AG2R’s Ben O’Connor. Antonio Tiberi (WorldTeam Team Bahrain Victorious) will be hoping the home crowd gets behind him.
Also, watch out for the sprinters. The fight for the maglia ciclamino should be very exciting this year. The up-and-coming Olav Kooji of Visma–Lease a Bike is one to watch in that.
The Giro d’Italia is beloved of cycling purists and it’s not hard to see why. We have 21 stages across 23 days to enjoy and endure. These include stunning mountain stages across the Apennines, the Alps and the Dolomites. You won’t want to miss any of it.
