The upcoming Snyder cut of Zack Snyder’s new film, Rebel Moonwhich has an official MPAA rating ahead of its Netflix debut.
First published in December 2023, Rebel Moon marks Zack Snyder’s return to film after his work Zack Snyder’s Justice Leaguewhich received much better reviews than its theatrical predecessor.
Rebel MoonThe reception was much more mixed upon arrival, as fans saw Snyder’s efforts to craft a new intergalactic space epic utilizing his own style of filmmaking in the 136-minute theatrical cut.
Rebel Moon’s Snyder Cut Gets a Rating
Like the official Film Ratings website, Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part One: Director’s Cut comes to Netflix with an R rating.
Description lists “brutal gory violence and gore, sexual content, graphic nudity and language.”
The 2023 original released on Netflix was only rated PG-13 “strong violence, sexual violence, gory images, language, sexual material and partial nudity.”
This is a surprising news announcement, as all of Snyder’s director’s cuts of his previous films use an R rating. These movies include from 2009 The guards2011 Sucker Punch (an extended cut was released in home media) 2016’s Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice (which saw the R-rated Ultimate Edition) and the above Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
In addition, several Snyder films originally entered theaters with an R rating, including 2004’s Dawn of the Dead2006 300and 2021 Army of the Dead.
After 2017 Defenders of justice was rated PG-13, the Snyder Cut of the DC film earned an R rating from the MPAA as part of the filmmaker’s plan for the director’s cut.
Original Rebel Moon even crossed the limits of a PG-13 rating, so it’s no surprise that the director’s cut is intended for a more mature audience.
What will the Snyder cut of Rebel Moon bring?
More than likely, a Snyder cut Rebel Moon mostly takes the violence and intensity to new heights, with star Ed Skrein already teasing a much more brutal portrayal of his villain Atticus Noble.
Snyder could also drop one or more R-rated F-bombs, though he only used two in his version Defenders of justice (one of them is voiced by Ben Affleck’s Batman).
Outside of the R-rating, fans will be hoping to see a film they can enjoy more than its predecessor, which didn’t earn many positive reviews due to major complaints from fans about Snyder’s latest outing.
It’s also likely that Snyder will continue this trend for the rest of his life Rebel Moon a story for which the director already has a total of three films ready.
