A letter to Leigh from her first husband, Herbert Leigh Holman, following her decision to leave him for Laurence Olivier:
“3 March
My poor darling, Viv, I do feel deeply and sincerely sorry for you. I know very well it is not me you have run away from, but yourself. If I had known you did not realise you can get nothing from marriage or any other personal contact except through what you put into it, I think I could have helped you. But you did not tell me what was happening, and I did not guess. You put nothing into it, darling, when it was most necessary.”
