A think tank has warned that the current local government model in Wales is ‘no longer sustainable’ and urged immediate reforms to prevent service collapse.

In its report, A Firm Foundation for Changethe Wales Centre for Public Policy (WCPP) highlights that years of austerity, rising demand for social care, and hollowing out of corporate centres have left councils at breaking point.

The report warns that without radical reform, local authorities risk being unable to meet statutory obligations, potentially leading to section 114 notices.

Key recommendations for the next Welsh Government include addressing systemic weaknesses in the local government finance system, streamlining accountability, developing workforce capacity and investing in innovative efforts to test and implement new delivery models.
