UK train services affected by Glasgow Central Station fire

Glasgow Central Station has been closed due to a fire in a nearby building, causing major travel disruptions across the UK.

The devastating blaze, described as like something from “the Blitz”, broke out on Sunday night (March 8).

It has caused severe damage to the 19th-century building, which has partially collapsed, including the destruction of several businesses. Fire crews remain at the scene.

Train services affected by the fire at Glasgow Central Station

The fire has caused disruptions to train services across the UK.

The following train companies have cancelled or revised all services to, from, or through Glasgow Central Station:

  • Forward West Coast
  • ScotRail
  • Cross Country
  • TransPennine Express

All four companies have arranged for passengers affected by the closure of Glasgow Central Station to use their tickets on alternative services, and have put easements in place for those looking to defer their trip to another day.

Forward West Coast

Avanti West Coast services scheduled for Monday (March 9) between Glasgow Central Station and destinations including London Euston and Birmingham New Street have been affected by the fire.

It advised passengers that an amended train service will run to Preston, Carlisle, and Motherwell, “enabling customers to connect with trains to Edinburgh and local services to the Glasgow area”.

ScotRail

The Glasgow Central Station fire has caused major disruptions for ScotRail services, with the following routes impacted, according to the website :

  • Ardrossan Harbour & Largs
  • Edinburgh Waverley – Glasgow Central via Carstairs
  • Edinburgh- Glasgow Central Via Shotts
  • Glasgow Central – Barrhead & Kilmarnock
  • Glasgow Central – East Kilbride via Giffnock
  • Glasgow Central – Neilston via Cathcart
  • Glasgow Central – Newton (Lanark)
  • Gourock & Wemyss Bay
  • Lanark
  • Paisley Canal
  • Stranraer/Girvan & Ayr Services
  • Edinburgh Waverley – Glasgow Central via Carstairs
  • Edinburgh- Glasgow Central Via Shotts
  • Dalmuir – Larkhall – Milngavie
  • Dalmuir – Whifflet & Motherwell
  • Glasgow Central – Barrhead & Kilmarnock
  • Glasgow/Dumfries – Carlisle (Newcastle)
  • Stranraer/Girvan & Ayr Services

⚠️ Update: Monday, 9 March –

Glasgow Central high level
The upper level will remain closed until further notice, with no services in and out of the station.

ScotRail service delivery director, Mark Ilderton, said: “We are sorry to customers for the impact this will cause, and we would urge them to check their journey options before they travel, and be aware there will be very limited replacement transport.”

TransPennine Express

The TransPennine Express railway between Glasgow Central and Preston has been blocked off due to the blaze.

As a result, TransPennine Express services to and from Glasgow Central and Manchester Airport/Liverpool Lime Street will not run on Monday (March 9).

Trains between Edinburgh and Newcastle/Manchester Airport will also be subject to delays and cancellations in both directions.

No trains or rail replacement buses are running between any of these locations, according to the TransPennine Express website.

It adds: “If you have purchased a ticket and your journey has been affected by this disruption, you can use your ticket dated 09/03/26 to travel on 10/03/26 and 11/03/26 at no extra cost.

“Alternatively, if the train you intended to travel on is cancelled or you are unable to complete your journey then you can apply for a refund from your point of purchase.”



Cross Country

All Cross Country lines to Glasgow Central Station have also been blocked off because of the fire.

“Train services running to and from this station may be cancelled,” the Cross Country website adds.

Tickets can be used at no extra cost on other select services.

Travel disruptions at Glasgow Central Station to last for 2 days

Travel disruptions to and from Glasgow Central Station are expected to last for two days, with Scotland’s busiest railway station expected to remain closed on Tuesday (March 10) as well.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “ GlasgowCentralStation remains closed following the fire in a building on Union Street on Sunday.

“While the fire is now under control, emergency services are still on site and we continue to support their response.

“The station will remain closed today and likely tomorrow. Timescales for reopening will only be confirmed once we are able to safely gain access and carry out the necessary checks.

“All services to and from GlasgowCentral are currently suspended, and passengers should continue to follow alternative travel arrangements as advised by their train operators.

“We will provide further updates as soon as more information is available.”
