An investigation has been launched after the crane collapsed at the West London building site

A crane collapsed in West London, crushing part of a construction site. A shocking picture shared by Construction Enquirer show the yellow luffing jib tower crane having smashed into scaffolding on a project on Barlby Road, Ladbroke Grove, for Kensington and Chelsea Council.

It happened after the jib detached from its fixing at about 10am on Wednesday (March 4). The London Fire Brigade said around 100 people were evacuated from the site before they arrived, and added that the incident was over by 10.21am. There were no reported injuries.

A spokesperson for The Hill Group said: “On Wednesday, March 4, an incident occurred at our Barlby Road site, being constructed on behalf of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, involving the jib of a tower crane becoming detached from its fixing.

“We can confirm that no one was injured, and the site was immediately evacuated. The HSE are aware, and the site remains closed until the incident is fully investigated, the area cleared and deemed safe for construction to recommence.”

The £43m Barlby Road project is part of Phase 2 of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s New Homes Programme. The development will provide 83 new homes, including 38 homes for social rent and 10 for key workers, as well as a multi-use sports hall. Hill Partnership began on site in July 2023 and the first residents were expected to move in by May 2026.
