Looking for things to do in London in April? We’ve got you covered

You’re in plenty of time to book tickets to the best events in London, from theatre shows to art exhibitions, and there are always pop-ups opening across the city, but our handy guide features the best of what’s on in London in April so you won’t miss a thing.

There are some big name stars treading the boards this month, including Rosamund Pike, Sadie Sink, Rebecca Lucy Taylor, Aidan Turner, and Lesley Manville so there’s plenty for theatre fans to indulge in. With Easter taking place in April this year, there’ll be more indulgence on the cards as the chocolate and egg-themed specials come your way. Talking of food, there’s Stop Food Waste Day this month, so there’s even more reason to visit some of the city’s restaurants that are turning food trash into treasure.

There’s no shortage of Easter chocolate on offer at the shops but why not take things up a notch this year by creating your own chocolate eggs? We’re teaming up with Alexandra Lunn, founder of Well–Crafted, to host an exclusive egg decorating masterclass for our INSIDERS at Sir Devonshire Square on Sat 4th April, so you’ll have beautiful eggs ready for Easter Sunday. You’ll have a large premium white or milk chocolate egg as your canvas and melted coloured chocolate and edible embellishments for decorations. Alexandra will take you through piping and decorating techniques that you can use to personalise your egg. Whether you’re making an Easter gift or keeping them for yourself, you’ll leave with something that looks impressive and tastes just as good. Get your tickets here.

Other highlights will include a celebration of the music of Downton Abbey at Central Hall Westminster, a screening of Emma introduced by composer Rachel Portman, and David Arnold (composer for Casino Royale, Independence Day, Sherlock, and Good Omens) in conversation about his career at the Royal College of Music.

KOKUM is East Dulwich’s go-to spot for modern Indian food thanks to its refined takes on regional classics. That includes one of India’s most popular street food dishes, chaat, which you can learn how to make like a pro at this masterclass exclusively for our INSIDERS. Whether you’re a novice in the kitchen or you’re looking to expand your repertoire, you’ll leave having nailed chaat’s sweet, spicy and tangy layers, plus a goodie bag worth £20 filled with sev, chaat masala, tamarind chutney and recipe cards so you can cook up more chaat at home. immersive David Bowie exhibition

A new immersive experience all about David Bowie is coming to Lightroom. The King’s Cross gallery, which has put on exhibitions on Vogue and David Hockney, is hosting David Bowie: You’re Not Alone, which will take people inside the mind of the visionary artist. The presentation features a mixture of famous, rarely seen and never-before-exhibited material taken from the David Bowie Archive in New York along with photography, drawings, lyrics, personal notes and audio recordings. Bowie’s is the sole voice of the experience and the structure of the show offers a unique insight into his thoughts on topics like theatricality, spirituality, songwriting and creativity. So as well as looking and sounding incredible – there’ll be 360° visuals and reconfigured tracks for the gallery’s spatial audio system – it’s promising to be an “intimate and revealing self-portrait”.

Alexander McQueen runway

Multi-arts orchestral music festival Multitudes is returning to the Southbank Centre this spring as part of the venue’s 75th anniversary year, and the centrepiece of the programme is Un-natural Harmony: The Sound of Alexander McQueen. Created by the London Contemporary Orchestra, Robert Ames, and John Gosling, McQueen’s longtime music director and collaborator, the concert is a live orchestral reimagining of the music that inspired McQueen’s most iconic fashion shows. Classical and contemporary pieces, including Purcell’s ‘Dido and Aeneas’, Handel’s ‘Sarabande’, Mozart’s ‘II. Adagio: Piano Concerto No.23′, The Rolling Stones’ ‘Paint It Black’ and Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’, will be blended together at the concert, showcasing McQueen’s bold use of music and the way he moved between beauty and brutality.

Hurvin Anderson painting

More than 80 paintings from across Hurvin Anderson’s entire career are going on display at Tate Britain in what will be the first major show on the artist. The youngest of eight and the first to be born in the UK after his family moved to Birmingham from Jamaica in the 1960s, Anderson’s work reflects his experiences of belonging and diaspora. His rich, colourful works often include family members, experiences from his youth and places of significance, like the barbershop, which he sometimes layers as a way of exploring the ideas of memory and tension around cultural heritage.

Sally Abé

Sally Abé has led restaurants in London before, including Michelin-starred pub The Harwood Arms and The Pem, but now she’s opening her first place on her own. She’s back in the capital after an interlude in the Cotswolds as Head of Food at The Bull in Charlbury to open British bistro Teal by Sally Abé on Wilton Way. The site was last home to Sesta, which was open for just over year, and before that, tasting menu spot Pidgin, which lasted for nine years.
