Learning through play approach

At the heart of the Acorns programme is a focus on personal development and learning through play. The Nursery provides a calm, nurturing environment where children feel secure and confident as they begin their educational journey. Daily activities balance routine with discovery, encouraging language development, creativity, social interaction and independence.

From storytelling and sensory play to music, imaginative activities and outdoor exploration, children are supported by highly qualified staff who understand the importance of these formative years. The goal is simple: to ensure every child’s first experience of school is joyful, engaging and enriching.

Inspiring facilities and unique outdoor space

The Nursery’s facilities play an important role in this experience. Bright, welcoming classrooms are paired with large outdoor spaces that encourage curiosity, confidence and active play. A purpose-built playground featuring climbing equipment, sand and mud areas, imaginative zones and sensory features allows children to explore and learn through movement and collaboration.

Outdoor learning forms part of everyday life at Devonshire House, whatever the weather, helping children build resilience, independence and a lifelong enthusiasm for discovery.

Wraparound care – 8am to 6pm

Further strengthening its Early Years offering, the school has introduced a new 8am–6pm wraparound care programme for children from age two. Delivered in partnership with Let’s Leap, the service provides a seamless extension to the school day, giving families added flexibility while ensuring children remain in a familiar, caring environment.

Demand at an all-time high

Interest in Nursery places continues to grow rapidly. For September 2026 entry, Devonshire House has already reached 75 per cent of current capacity, a first for the school, with places allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The January 2027 intake is also proving popular and is already half full.

The school organises several Open Mornings each term, allowing parents to experience the Nursery and wider school environment first-hand. Tours are led by Devonshire House pupils from Year 6 and Year 8, offering visitors a unique insight into school life. Private tours are also available for registered families, and the admissions process is designed to be quick, smooth and accessible, including remote options.

With its new Acorns class now thriving and expanded services in place, Devonshire House School continues to invest in its youngest learners, ensuring children are supported by outstanding care, inspiring environments and a confident start to their educational journey.
