The BBC previously confirmed the hit drama would be getting a prequel series, set to air this Christmas, and a film.

It is understood that the Call the Midwife prequel will be set in Poplar during World War II and will be created by Thomas.

Details on the film’s plot are still kept secret, however creator of the hit series, Hedi Thomas, previously announced it would take place overseas.

Sharing: “The rise in hospital births, and changes in the NHS, have clipped their [midwives] wings, and this is their chance to take flight and work out what really matters… it is going to look absolutely fantastic on the big screen.”

But now, fans may be finding out where Nonnatus House will be heading in the series 15 finale.

Huge news to be revealed in the series finale of Call the Midwife

Speaking to Radio Times, Thomas shared that there are three settings for the Call the Midwife film, including Australia.

Discussing the news, Thomas said: “One is Australia, and there are another two… I’ll keep under wraps for now.”

Before teasing that the series 15 finale would give Call the Midwife fans some more details: “Sister Julienne names [all the possible locations], so we won’t keep people in suspense for very long.”

Call the Midwife creator confirms characters starring in prequel

Thomas previously chatted to the Radio Times about who will be starring in the Call the Midwife series.

Speaking to Radio Times at the magazine’s 2026 Covers Party, Thomas shared that younger versions of Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) and Sister Evangelina (Pam Ferris) will star in the prequel.

Sister Evangelina was in five series of Call the Midwife; however, the character died due to complications following a stroke.

Thomas also shared that the returning Sisters will be joined by three new young midwives who are all “relatively new to the East End.”
