As temperatures begin to rise slightly and spring sets in, car coats make a great transitional piece. Both practical and stylish, they go well with all kinds of outfits.

Marks and Spencer offers a few models, including the £70 Pure Cotton Car Coat which seems to be a particular hit with fans. Available in petite and regular, it comes in mole and light caramel – although some sizes are currently out of stock.

The garment is made in a regular fit with a collared neckline and button-through front. It’s finished with two handy side pockets and adjustable straps on the cuffs.

For extra warmth, you can pair it with the £20 Air-Yarn Crew Neck Jumper from Marks and Spencer. The coat has a 4.7 rating from 30 reviews.

One happy shopper wrote: “This coat is very smart and stylish. It’s the perfect coat for spring or autumn.”

Another added: “Great material, it hangs nicely. It’s a good quality basic for your wardrobe.”

A third commented: “A timeless quality item. This coat is perfectly cut and has a great feel, and the colour is brilliant.”

There has been minimal criticism of the product, but some customers weren’t as thrilled: “It was bulky and the material was too stiff. The neckline wasn’t good either.”

Alternatively, you could opt for the £199 Classic Cotton Long Car Coat from COS. It’s designed with a pointed collar, full lining and a concealed placket.

On the cheaper side, there’s the Car Coat from H&M. Retailing for £44.99, it comes in beige and dark brown.
