Residents in and around Stafford are being invited to share their views on whether the county town should establish a new town council, Stafford Borough Council has announced.

Letters are being sent to households in the area outlining the proposal as part of a Community Governance Review, which will assess whether creating a town council is appropriate for Stafford and nearby Doxey.

The consultation runs for six weeks until 22 March and offers residents the opportunity to complete a short questionnaire on the proposal.

Stafford is currently the only unparished area within the borough, meaning it has no parish or town council, while all surrounding villages and towns have this most local tier of government.

Councillors have said that, with wider local government reorganisation planned – including the abolition of district and county councils in Staffordshire by 2028 – a town council could help maintain local representation for the county town.

If supported, elections for the new council would take place in 2027, with councillors representing around 49,000 residents.
