A feature-length version of the BBC’s long-running period drama was announced in May last year and was confirmed to be set overseas.
Thomas described the film as an opportunity for the characters to “take flight” after years anchored in their East London community.
When initially announcing the series, she said: “As the classic Call the Midwife series moves further into the 1970s, it also seems the perfect time for our much-loved regulars to take a short break from Poplar and test themselves in an unfamiliar landscape.
“The rise in hospital births, and changes in the NHS, have clipped their wings, and this is their chance to take flight and work out what really matters… it is going to look absolutely fantastic on the big screen.”
Where could the Call the Midwife film be set?
Thomas has hinted that Australia is one of three settings being considered for the story, offering fans a tantalising glimpse of what could be a dramatic change of scene.
At the 2026 Radio Times Covers Party, she confirmed that while Australia is a strong contender, there are two other options still under wraps.
Thomas shared: “It’s not so much doubts (about Australia), but there are three options. One is Australia, and there are another two.
“I’ll keep under wraps for now.”
However, viewers won’t have to wait too long for answers.
Thomas hinted the film’s destination will be revealed soon.
She said: “In the season 15 finale, Sister Julienne names them all, so we won’t keep people in suspense for very long.”
While the cast for the film remains unconfirmed, anticipation is high as fans await confirmation of which familiar faces will make the journey to the big screen.
The film isn’t the only expansion of Call the Midwife that is currently in the works.
Fans will also have season 16 of the BBC period drama to look forward to, and a new prequel series is set to launch this Christmas.
The prequel will be set during World War Two and follow younger versions of Sister Julienne, Sister Evangelina and Sister Monica Joan as they navigate life and work during wartime.
All of these projects are being written and produced by Thomas and executive producers Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank.
