Filming has begun in Ireland on The Weira new feature written and directed by Conor McPherson and based on his Olivier Award winning play.

The film features the cast of the recent critically acclaimed stage revival, with Brendan Gleeson, Owen McDonnell, Seán McGinley, Kate Phillips and Tom Vaughan‑Lawlor returning.

The stage production has been an awards contender, earning Brendan Gleeson Best Actor nominations at both the Critics’ Circle and The Standard Theatre Awards, alongside nods for Best Revival of a Play, Best Newcomer for Kate Phillips, and Best Ensemble.

Set in a remote Irish pub, the story follows four local men whose nightly routine is disrupted by the arrival of Valerie, a newcomer from Dublin.

In an effort to impress her, they share local folklore and ghost stories, but the tone shifts when Valerie reveals the tragic reason behind her move.

Producers on the film include Kate Horton for Kate Horton Productions, Anne Clarke for Landmark Productions, Andrea Calderwood and Gail Egan for Potboiler Productions, and Lara Hickey for Copper Alley Productions, supported by Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland in association with Curzon Film.

Executive producers are Conor McPherson, Brendan Gleeson, Keith Potter for Screen Ireland, and Philip Knatchbull and Louisa Dent for Curzon Film.

Curzon and Break Out Pictures have jointly acquired distribution rights for the UK and Ireland.

Conor McPherson’s previous screen work includes Saltwater, The Eclipse, I Went Down, and Paula, while his theatre credits range from Girl from the North Country to The Night Alive and Shining City.
