A study of 2,000 adults found 11 per cent consider the after dinner treat to be the most protected item on their plate and wouldn’t dream to let their other half have the last bite.

Fries, ice cream, and anything not offered also rank high on the ‘no-go’ list.

With just 27 per cent happy to share everything on a date.

It also emerged plate-picking is common though, as 44 per cent have pinched a bite of their partner’s meal.

The study was commissioned by TGI Fridays, which is offering complimentary cocktails until February 15th

Phil Broad, global president and managing director at the firm said: “Going out to eat has always been about more than just the food, and our research shows that’s especially true when it comes to dating.

“From stealing a fry to negotiating who gets the last bite of dessert, it’s these shared moments that make a date night memorable.

“We’ve always been about bringing people together over great food and drinks and creating moments worth celebrating.

This Valentine’s Day, our complimentary Ultimate Cocktails give couples the perfect way to raise a glass to connection, friendship, and togetherness”.

The study also found 32 per cent of those polled claim they don’t mind their date taking a bite of their food – as long as they ask.

While 19 per cent went as far as saying they appreciate it, because ‘sharing is caring,’ and 11 per cent consider it to be an act of flirting.

But nearly one in 20 (four per cent) said having someone pinch food from their plate ruins the meal, with three per cent giving their other half a dirty look if they try to attempt it.

While two per cent admitted it leaves them feeling so angry they consider walking out.

Despite this, arguments appear to be rare with just eight per cent having disagreements with a date over sharing food.

The research, carried out via OnePoll, found that when it comes to Valentine’s Day dining, comfort and connection take priority.

Nearly half (40 per cent) prefer a relaxed, low-key or casual dining experience, whereas only five per cent choose a fancy restaurant.
