At the age of 82, poet Beman has released his first published collection, offering readers an uplifting and candid reflection on a life defined by work, family, adversity and humour.

Facing Life with a Smile is scheduled for release on January 23rd 2026 and is currently available for pre-order via Amazon, Waterstones, Barnes & Noble and other major retailers.

The collection brings together poems drawn directly from Beman’s own experiences, capturing moments from across his life with warmth, honesty and an optimistic outlook.

Born in 1943 in West Yorkshire, Beman was raised in a mining community by parents who worked as a weaver and a bricklayer. He later built a career as a carpenter and site manager and married his wife in 1971.

His life took a dramatic turn in 1990 after a serious fall from a ladder. Following several spinal operations, Beman was left paralysed and had to adjust to a completely new way of living.

“After my injury, I found myself with time to spare, and I started to write poetry.” Shared Beman.

During his recovery, writing became a way to process the trauma he had experienced. What began as a personal coping mechanism gradually evolved into a collection of poems, encouraged by the positive response of family and friends.

“Making people smile was always my main aim. Most of what I’ve written is true to life, and when people told me they enjoyed my poems and encouraged me to write a book.” Benman added.

Although many of the poems explore deeply personal themes, humour remains a consistent presence, offering readers moments of lightness alongside reflection.

Facing Life with a Smile is published by UK-based Maple Publishers, with cover design, illustrations and book layout created by White Magic Studios.
