Now I don’t want to speak to soon, folks – but it seems as though the relentless tug of war between Richmond and Islington could finally be over. Why’s that, I hear you ask? Well, because London’s ‘Borough of the Year’ has recently been crowned. And neither Islington or Richmond (the two boroughs that are frequently named the best of the bunch) got a look in.

The rather prestigious New London Architecture Awards have recently taken place. The annual awards (which happen to be supported by Sadiq Khan) shine a light on a range of outstanding projects that are shaping the city. From culture and conservation to healthcare and housing; plenty of awards were dished out. But new for 2025 was the ‘Borough of the Year’ award. And that’s the one that has particularly piqued our interest.

The New London Architecture’s Borough of the Year

The London Borough of Lambeth was the lucky locale that snapped up the crown. Home to the likes of Clapham, Brixton, Streatham, and Waterloo; Lambeth was hailed a ‘place of opportunity’ and praised for its ‘strong focus on people and community engagement’. Lambeth’s NLA accolades didn’t end there, though. The borough’s beloved Brixton Recreational Centre and Public Realm also took home a prize, having been named the best cultural project of the year.

Claire Holland, Leader of Lambeth Council, said: “We are a dynamic, ambitious borough where change is a constant, and we are determined to fully play our role shaping that future. Core to that determination is how we support inclusive growth that ensures that everyone here can contribute to and benefit from the many projects and developments across Lambeth.”

You can peruse the full list of NLA award winners here.
