Bitdefender offers a free version for Windows. It can be a good starting point, but if you own a Mac, Android or iOS, the most affordable plan will be the basic Antivirus Plus, which costs $19.99 for the first year. Additionally, the paid plan offers additional features compared with the free version. The paid version will secure your files from encryption by ransomware, runs faster than the free version, will prevent unauthorized access of your webcam and microphone, lets you access your devices remotely in case your device is hacked and finally, comes with an included VPN.
Norton does not offer a free version, but the plan starts at $19.99. While Bitdefender and Norton cost the same for their basic plan, Norton offers more services for their higher-priced plans. The highest-tiered plan, Norton 360 with LifeLock Ultimate Plus at $299.88 for the first year, offers insurance for identity theft damages of up to $3 million dollars in coverage. It also comes with Norton’s LifeLock Identity Alert System, which will inform you when your Social Security number or other personal identifying information is used on credit, loan or other applications.
Operating Systems Supported
It’s important to make sure the operating systems you use are supported by the antivirus you choose. Bitdefender’s free version only works for Windows. However, both of these companies’ paid plans support Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS and Android.
Maximum Number of Devices
For both Bitdefender and Norton, the number of devices you can use will depend on the plan you choose. With Bitdefender, the lowest-priced plan protects up to three devices and the number goes up to 15 for the Bitdefender Family Pack. The company’s highest-priced plan, which is geared for small office security, costs $89.99 and supports 10 devices.
