The UK welcomes this important panel discussion.
We recognise that all individuals, regardless of their sex characteristics, are entitled to dignity, respect, and the full enjoyment of their human rights. Yet, we remain concerned by the persistent reports of discrimination and violence, including in medical settings, faced by intersex persons in many parts of the world, as has been outlined today.
These practices can have lifelong impacts on physical and mental health, and undermine the fundamental principle that everyone should be able to make informed decisions about their own bodies.
We note the progress being made to protect intersex persons, including in Africa and other regions. We must learn from these experiences, and listen to those directly affected, ensuring that their voices are central to policy development.
The UK looks forward to further discussions in the Council of Europe on how we can collectively improve laws and policies that uphold the dignity and respect of all people, including those with variations in sex characteristics.
We are committed to working with our international partners to promote inclusive approaches, challenge harmful stereotypes, and ensure that no one is left behind.
