Moomin artwork with drawn characters

Moomins are one of the most recognisable artworks out there, evoking childhood memories in many who were introduced to Tove Jansson’s creation from an early age. This year, they turn 80 years old, and the flagship Waterstone’s store in Central London is celebrating that fact with a series of events this month.

And who wouldn’t want to celebrate these adorable pieces of art? From today (August 1) you’ll notice a beautiful window installation by Elena Selena at the bookstoreas well as a Moominhouse installation on the second floor. And there’s more to be enjoyed as the month goes on…

Moomins 80th anniversary at Waterstones Piccadilly

On top of the beautifully designed storefront and Moominhouse, fans of the tales can find a Moomin-themed café on site on August 8-10, which will be complete with its own afternoon tea and family activities. There’s even promise of a special guest appearance, so it’s one not to miss if you or the little ones are Moomin lovers.

On the evening of August 8, you’ll also be able to attend a ‘superfan panel’ celebrating the Moomins with guests and fans Ayika Henry, Cariad Lloyd, Paul Gravett, and Phillip Ardagh with Guardian Chief Books writer Lisa Allardice. They’ll discuss the lasting impact of the Moomins and why they continue to be loved by both children and adults across the globe after all this time.

Taking place on August 10, you’ll also be able to attend a session with storyteller Liz Forst, who will be reading out from Tove Jansson’s stories and giving an account of their lasting appeal today. It’s an interactive storytelling, with tales from the land of the Moominsas well as the chance for kids to decorate a Moomin mask of their own to take away with them as a memory of the day.

Waterstones Piccadilly are celebrating 80 years of Tove Jansson’s beloved Moomins. Find it all at Waterstones, 203-206 Piccadilly, W1J 9HD (nearest station is Piccadilly Circus). You can book your Moomins Café session here; the superfan panel evening here; and your story time with Liz Forst session here.
