Millions of people across Spain, Portugal and parts of France have experienced widespread power outages, leaving entire cities without electricity and internet access on Monday, April 28, 2025. The massive power outage that has swept across the Iberian Peninsula has resulted in widespread disruption to transport and daily life.

What has been affected by the power outage in Spain, Portugal and France?

Airports in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville were severely affected, with flights delayed and operations temporarily halted. Madrid’s underground network was evacuated, and the city’s traffic lights stopped working, leading to significant congestion and safety concerns on the roads. Valencia’s metro system suspended all services, and other public transport networks across both countries reported major disruptions.

The outages have also disrupted telephone networks across the region, and some areas in southern France have reported power cuts. Authorities are managing the situation as restoration efforts continue, but the blackout has caused widespread disruption across the Iberian Peninsula and neighbouring regions.

What caused the power outage in Spain, Portugal and France?

Spain’s national electricity grid operator, Electric Redreported a sudden and dramatic drop in electricity supply at around 12:30 p.m. local time. While the exact cause of the outage remains under investigation, authorities are working urgently to restore power and determine what triggered the incident.

In a statement on social media, Electric Red assured the public that all available resources were being dedicated to resolving the situation as quickly as possible.

Spanish media estimated that millions were affected by the blackout, though official figures have not yet been released. Spain’s National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE) is investigating whether the widespread blackout may have been caused by a cyberattack. The government has also stated it is working to identify the source of the outages and determine what triggered the incident

As restoration efforts continue, authorities are urging people to remain patient and cautious, especially when traveling or navigating cities where traffic controls and public transport remain disrupted.

This is a breaking news story and will be regularly updated with more details.
