Could you imagine a world where you could walk into your local and pay what you felt like for a pint? The subject of the price of a 568ml jar of the good stuff is a heavily dissected topic, but Oxfam is opening up a spot where punters can determine the price of their own.
It’s only coming to the city for a day, but next week you’ll be able to roll up The Fair Pour in Holborn on Tuesday, January 21 and order yourself a pint for the price of… whatever you like! Is this some kind of strange dream?
Actually, no. Oxfam is setting up The Fair Pour at the Queen’s Head pub as a means to ask people to pay what’s fair based on their net worth. The pop-up pub opening coincides with Davos World Economic Forum, The Fair Pour is an opportunity to learn about wealth inequality from the charity, since ‘more affluent customers are encouraged to dig deep and to pay prices that reflect their individual wealth’. Of course, if you’re getting the round for a group you’ll have to make a quick scan around the table to determine what you think each should pay!
Since this is Dry January after all, this pub is non-alcoholicoffering a chance to enjoy an alcohol-free beer, wine, or mocktail (think the Old Money Fashioned, the Highballer, the Billionaire’s Breeze). There will also be members of Oxfam on hand with stats on tax justice to discuss how society can be made fairer, and you’ll also get to look forward to a pub quiz at 7pm sharp! A free (and alcohol-free) round is promised to the winning squad.
Speaking on the news, Kelly Mundy, Senior Campaigns Manager at Oxfam, said: “Wealth inequality is the shocking reality of our society, and a reality that’s worsening every year. It’s time for bold solutions like progressive taxation and investment in public services to create a more equal playing field.
“The Fair Pour pub highlights the urgent need for action to create a fairer world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. We hope it encourages people to think about how a fairer tax system could create a more just society for everyone.”
You can find The Fair Pour at 64 Theobalds Road, WC1X 8SF (nearest station is Holborn) on Tuesday, January 21 at 12pm-9pm for one day only!
