At the annual His Majesty’s Judges Dinner this evening (22 October), the Lord Mayor, Michael Mainelli, will address the growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the judicial system, calling for robust international standards to ensure ethical AI development.
The Lord Mayor will speak alongside the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Shabana Mahmood MP and the Lady Chief Justice, The Right Honourable the Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill.
An extract from the Lord Mayor’s speech is found below:
On ethical AI and international standards:
“The use of AI in our judicial system is, I know, an issue of some concern across the sector, just one of the reasons why the 695th Lord Mayor’s Ethical AI Initiative has been promoting international standards – specifically ISO 42001, the AI management system – through a course, an accord, and a consensus.
“The Walbrook AI Accord – leading to 38 countries agreeing to use ISO 42001 for regulation, as well as the formation of the AI Quality Infrastructure group.
“And the Coffee House Consensus – where $32 trillion of the $77 trillion of assets represented by the Corporate Governance Network have pledged their support for ISO 42001, last week launching a permanent Investor Council on Responsible AI (ICRAI).
“While the rule of law’s subtle importance all too frequently goes unrecognised, including by businesspeople, we shouldn’t need AI to tell us that it’s a foundation stone of societal infrastructure.
“One that is not only crucial to trade, but in the form of our thriving legal services sector, is of trade too.”
On the City Corporation’s commitment to the rule of law:
“The legacy of the City Corporation being deeply integrated with the judiciary continues to this day, not least in our £596 million investment in the Salisbury Square development – a flagship facility for His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service that will provide 18 new court rooms alongside a state-of-the-art headquarters for the Police, assisting its national role as the lead force for economic and cyber-crime.
“Here at the Corporation – which I affectionately like to refer to as the world’s oldest democratic workers’ and residents’ cooperative – we have then a long and proud tradition rooted in the law.
“The rule of law – which delivers the universal principles of accountability, just laws, open government, and accessible and impartial dispute resolution – underpins everything we do in the Square Mile.”
