Fans of X (formerly Twitter) seem to believe that the moment in the trailer where Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik receives one of Sonic’s quills from the collaboration could be Metal Sonic’s film debut.
At the 1:58 mark of the first trailer, Sonic can be seen donning his feathers to Carrey’s take on the iconic video game villain as the Blue Blur and friends work to stop Shadow the Hedgehog’s reign of terror.
From the beginning Sonic one of the most important plot points in the movie series has been Dr. Robotnik’s obsession with Sonic.
His quest to obtain one of Sonic’s quills has been key to Robotnik’s villainous journey, so this revelation was seen Sonic 3 can prove massive for the character’s future evil endeavors.
The most logical of these ominous plans – especially when another very powerful secondary urchin bursts onto the scene in the year Sonic 3 – could be Robotnik chasing his own Sonic clone.
In the year Sonic After the games, after Sonic has foiled his plans one too many times, Robotnik sets out to give the franchise’s iconic snarky speedster a worthy opponent.
This comes in the form of Metal Sonic, a steely Blue Blur facsimile that not only looks like Sonic, but can mimic his every move.
While the games didn’t require a feather to create Robotnik’s Metal Sonic creation, getting his hands on Sonic’s DNA would make a lot of sense if he wanted to create a perfect clone of the franchise character.

Fans have been abuzz with speculation about the possible inclusion of the characters in the series Sonic 3 movie.
Whether it’s Rouge the Bat, Big the Cat, for our beloved Amy Rose (read more about Amy’s possibilities Sonic the Hedgehog 3 here), there have been plenty of characters that the Sonic faithful seem to believe will make it into the franchise’s big screen trilogy. And – thanks to this theory – Metal Sonic has joined this list.
Now, while some of these characters have no real evidence of a role in the big screen hit series, it can be argued that Metal Sonic is being set up for his film debut.
If he is involved Sonic 3he would probably end up in a similar role to Shadow Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
In that film, after Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles had stopped Dr. Robotnik, a post-release scene teased Shadow’s role in the next film, starring him at a secret government facility in some form of cryosleep.
When Keanu Reeves’ angsty hedgehog wants to be the third’s primary antagonist Sonic Throwing Metal Sonic into the mix in anything other than a small cameo to hint at the next movie feels like a mistake.
Perhaps in the movie, Robotnik will fall back into his bad ways after briefly teaming up with Sonic and the others, eventually working towards developing a Blue Blur-like hedgehog that follows his every command.
Since Metal Sonic is known as one of Sonic’s most dangerous foes, the character seems like he should deserve to be the opposite focus of the film to himself.
Therefore, by setting him small temptations, as seen in the trailer Sonic 3could be a smart choice before he and Robotnik are made into potential main villains Sonic 4.
Sonic 3’s The cast is already in place, so Paramount is likely looking for a big name for the role (that is, unless they want Ben Schwartz to double and also use his iconic Sonic voice with a robot filter for the role).
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hits theaters on December 20th.
